Life’s Reflections

Renee Denise Payne was born September 29, 1960 in Kansas City, Missouri she was the oldest child born to Mr. Louis Slaughter and Mrs. Gladys Marie Slaughter. Renee dedicated her life to Christ at an early age and was baptized at Guiding Star Missionary Baptist Church.

Renee married the love of her life Michael Lenardo Payne, Sr. on March 29, 1981 and through this union 4 beautiful children were born, Deondra; Michael, Jr.; Katrina; and Antwan.  Renee and Michael were together for 43 years and married for 37 years.  Renee’s family was her biggest joy.  She would often say that material things never meant much to her, but love of her family was priceless.  Renee especially loved spending Christmas with her family, and Michael would always make sure that every Christmas was a Christmas to remember.  To her siblings she was joked to be like their second mama. Even as they grew older she still filled the role of “The Boss.” Over the last several years Renee developed a special date day with her mother whom she would spend every Friday with shopping, eating, and spending quality time together.  Though she loved her family Renee’s first love was her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Renee rededicated her life to Christ in 1990 and began serving the Lord in full capacity.  She was a faithful member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the Late Reverend O.L. Cobbins for 25 years until she moved to Irving, Texas to be closer to her children and grandchildren.  Renee was a Sunday School teacher, Choir Member, Youth Director, faithful prayer meeting attendee, Junior Mission, Mission and BTU member. Her children would often joke that they lived at the church because every time the church doors opened Renee and her family were there, sometime before service even started and often times after it had ended.

Renee worked as a Respiratory Therapist Secretary for KU Medical Center for 17 year then went on to care for her grandchildren in Texas for 3 years while also working at Kohl’s Department Store until her final days.

Renee Departed this life and went on to her forever home in heaven to be with her heavenly and earthly father on January 5, 2018 surrounded by her loved ones.  When her spirit ascended into heaven a smile slowly swept across her face and she had the most angelic look.

She is preceded in death by her father, Louis Slaughter, Sr.; paternal grandparents, Osborn Slaughter and Sally Slaughter; and maternal grandparents, John Q. Williams and Marie Williams.

Renee is survived by her spouse, Michael Payne, Sr. of Fort Worth, Texas; their children, Deondra Payne (Reginald) of Prairieville, Louisiana; Katrina McConnell (Charles) of Arlington Texas; Michael Payne, Jr. of Los Angeles, California; Antwan Payne (LaKeisha) of Mansfield, Texas;  mother, Gladys Marie McCoy of Kansas City, Kansas; her siblings Carla Ann Thomas; Louis Slaughter, Jr.; (LaShelle); Cynthia Elaine Abanishe (Paul); Theresa  Pledger (Matt); Angelia Lillian Slaughter (Donald); mother-in-law, Brenda Marie Payne; a host of sister-in-laws; her grandchildren, Kiersten Johnson; Zaria Doss; Myles Payne; Reginald Johnson Jr.; Apollo Payne; Zion Payne; and Zoe McConnell; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
