Cooley Hunter Cowherd was born on August 20, 1926 in Lexington, Kentucky to Owen B. Cowherd and Nora Patterson-Cowherd.
Cooley joined the United States Army where he retired honorably after 23 years of service. He served in World War II and was the recipient of four Good Conduct Medals and achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class. After his Army retirement, he began working for Mercy Hospital as a security officer, where he retired after 18 years.
Cooley met Vertil in 1970, and they were married in 1972 in Muskegon, Michigan. They were happily married for 44 years. Cooley was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he had accepted Christ at a very young age.
In his past time, Cooley enjoyed sitting in his chair watching his black and white movies (Westerns).
Cooley 89, passed away on May 11, 2016 at his home in Kansas City, Kansas
Cooley was preceded in death by his parents, Owen and Nora Cowherd; two sisters, Ada Upchurch; Eliza Garner; brother, Joseph Cowherd; sons, Bill Cowherd; and Frederick Cowherd.
Cooley is survived by his spouse, Vertil of Kansas City, Kansas; His children, Ester Piersall of Lexington, Kentucky; Vinda Wilson (Willie) of Muskegon, Michigan; and Johnny Cowherd of Lexington, Kentucky; two special daughter in laws, Brenda Cowherd of Muskegon, Michigan; and Cynthia Cowherd of Lexington, Kentucky; 1 Godchild, DeLara Jackson of Muskegon, Michigan; Cooley has 17 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth McIntyre of Georgetown, Kentucky; and brother, Owen Cowherd (Mabel) of Altadena, California; 22 nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
