Vernon Errol Pitchlyn, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away in January 2026. A proud product of the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools, Vernon graduated from Sumner High School in 1963.
Following graduation, Vernon honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967. Upon returning home, he began a dedicated 40-year career at the General Motors Fairfax Plant, retiring in 2007.
Vernon’s spiritual journey began at a young age when he was baptized at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church under Rev. H.W. Bowen. In 1981, he embraced the Bahá'í Faith, remaining a devoted member until his passing.
On July 29, 1989, Vernon was united in Holy Matrimony with Carol Lee Jackson. Together, they shared 37 years of marriage and were blessed with a daughter, Delores LeeHannah.
Known for his vibrant personality, Vernon was a true patron of the arts and a connoisseur of music. He was frequently found behind the turntables as a DJ for parties and celebrations, often showcasing his own "smooth moves" as a talented dancer. An enthusiast of Black history and culture, he was also an avid world traveler. On the field, he was a stellar ballplayer recognized for his dynamic left-hand fastball pitch. Above all, Vernon was a strong advocate for his family.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Perry L. Pitchlyn, Sr., and Osceolia Milan -Tillmon, and his brothers, Carl Kendall, Jr., David Kendall, and Harold Pitchlyn.
His memory will be cherished by his loving wife, Carol L. Pitchlyn; his children, Delores L. Anders (Seth, Sr.), Paul E. Jackson, Derek Billups, Deano M. Pitchlyn, Mona P. Pitchlyn and Demetrius T. Pitchlyn; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his siblings: Perry L. Pitchlyn, Jr. (Lollie), Judy Peters, Myles Kendall (Angela), Ronnie Pitchlyn, Diane Mitchell, Donna Wood, Brenda Boone (Mose Zelle), Regina Pitchlyn Taylor, Carolyn J. Ray (Tony), Ossie Ivory (Sylvester), Luvinia Kendall, and Carla Kendall, along with a devoted host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
