Vernon Dawson

Vernon W. Dawson, 77, passed away on June 17, 2025 in Kansas City, KS.  He was born on January 18th, 1948, in Kansas City, KS, to Robert W. Dawson and Bernice McElwee.

Vernon grew up in Kansas City, KS. He graduated from Sumner High School in Kansas City, KS, in 1966. After High School, Vernon joined the United States Navy and served for four years. Vernon worked for the Kansas City Area Transit Authority as a mechanic, ultimately retiring from there.

Vernon enjoyed sports, music, traveling, and politics. Vernon was preceded in death by his mother, Bernice J. McElwee, and his brother, Virgil McElwee.

Vernon is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Dawson-Chestnut and LaVerne Dawson; his siblings, Diane Dawson, Helen Dawson, Robert Dawson, Harry Dawson, and John McElwee; grandchildren, Allauna Bailey, Katelin Simmons, and Jayden Collins; great-grandchildren, Milo Simmons; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Burial will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
