Trey Lamonte Payne Sr., born on July 23, 1987, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Elroy Anthony and Felicia Payne, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 12, 2025. Trey was a man of faith, love, and resilience whose light will forever shine in the hearts of those who knew him.
Trey accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age, while frequently fellowshipping with his family at Greater Jerusalem Baptist Church. As his relationship with Christ grew stronger, his faith became the cornerstone that carried him through some of life’s greatest challenges.
Trey was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend. A hard-working provider, he tirelessly strived to create a better life for his family. Trey had a special gift for bringing people together and lifting their spirits. He was a natural coach, always ready to share advice, encouragement, and wisdom. With his infectious smile and sense of humor, Trey made it nearly impossible to feel sad in his presence—he always found a way to make you laugh and brighten your day.
Trey was a devoted father who shared a strong bond with both Trey Jr. and Harmoni. He fully engaged actively in their lives, coaching them in basketball, playing catch, and ensuring they had quality family time, often. It was Trey that ignited their love and passion for music.
A true testament to faith and resilience, Trey was a true fighter. He battled and over came four bouts of two different cancers with unyielding positivity, faith, and hope. Through it all, he held firm to his belief in god’s goodness and inspired others with his unwavering strength.
Trey had a joy for life that was contagious. Whether playing video games with cousins and friends, bowling, coaching others, playing the piano, or simply spending time with his loved ones. Trey found happiness in the simple moments. A die-hard Kansas City Chiefs fan, he cheered for his team with unmatched passion, bringing the same energy to every aspect of his life.
He was preceded in death by, grandparents, Hildagard and Roger Riley, Robert Payne Jr, Bobbie Jean Smallwood, Gracie Jackson. Aunt and uncle, Rosalind Rogers Sr and Robert Payne III and cousin’s, Antoine Lamonte Payne, and Royce Alexander Reed.
Left to cherish Trey’s memories are, his wife of 12 years, Britney Payne; his children Harmoni Payne and Trey Payne Jr, his mother, Felicia Payne, his father Elroy Anthony, his dad Anthony Smallwood. Trey is survived by his siblings: Ashley Smallwood, Justin Smallwood, El'Dawan Anthony, El'Lexis Anthony, El'Lias Anthony, El'Lasia Wilson, Gracie'El Anthony, and Leanna Anthony; three stepbrothers, two stepsisters, and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and loved ones.

Rest in peace, Trey. Your light will never fade.
