Shirley Ann Douglas, daughter of the late Elvin and Freda Mae (Harris) Baker, was born October 12, 1940, in Kansas City, Kansas. She attended Dunbar North Elementary, Northeast Junior High, and Sumner High School, graduating in 1958. She was awarded a certificate for outstanding Achievement in Science in the Greater Kansas City Science Fair.
In addition, Sumner High School presented her with a certificate of Appreciation in recognition of her exemplary services.
She attended Trinity A.M.E. Church where she was a faithful member. She sang in the choir; was on the steward board as well as other capacities within the church.
After High School, she attended K.U. Medical Center where she earned her LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) certification. She worked at St. Margaret Hospital for several years.
Changing her career, Shirley attended Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas, earning her bachelor's degree in English, then on to her master's degree in reading. She began her teaching career at Northeast Junior High School and ended her 30-year teaching career at Eisenhower Middle School.
She married Charles Douglas Sr. in July 1958 and had 3 children. They loved to travel the world together.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Frayola Webster, Ollie Mae Rodgers, Clara Hodge and Mattie Wilson; three brothers, Clarence Hodge, Elvin (Bobby) Baker and James Baker Sr; and daughter Sheila D. Douglas.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband Charles Douglas Sr. of 68 years; her son, Charles Douglas Jr.; daughter, Sharon L. Douglas; two grandchildren, Sharelle Mitchell and Jarelle Easterwood; one sister, Claudette Briggs (Leonard); one brother, Claude Baker (Andrea); and a host of nieces and nephews and sisters-in-law.
