Samuel Byers Obituary

Samuel Elester Byers, Sr. entered the world on June 2, 1935, in Morrilton, Arkansas, the son of Arthur Neal and Genora (Garlington) Byers. As the third of four children, Samuel relocated with his family to Kansas City, Kansas when he was just five years old.

From a young age, Samuel devoted himself to his faith, embracing Christianity early and actively serving in numerous roles within the Catholic Church throughout his life-demonstrating a deep and unwavering love for the Lord.

Samuel attended Douglass School, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and Ward High School.

Although he did not complete high school, Samuel was known for his remarkable intelligence and was considered a self-taught scholar. His passion for athletics was evident, and he excelled in various sports. This enthusiasm later led him to become an assistant coach for girls' basketball and softball teams, guiding them to several state championships.

Samuel began his working life at Union Station, proudly serving coffee to everyone in the building. His career path was diverse and included positions at the U.S. Postal Service, Garlington Construction Company, Macy's, and even work as a furrier for Tibel Furs.

In August 1952, Samuel married the love of his life, showering her with unconditional affection. Together, they raised four biological children and adopted six brothers, truly embodying the role of a family patriarch and establishing a lasting legacy. Samuel and his wife Mary set a strong example of building generational wealth, opening multiple businesses that provided employment opportunities for many family members.

He founded his first liquor store in 1965 at 7th and Freeman, followed by Byers Liquor at 18th and Garfield, and later Byers Liquor and Party Shop at 13th and Washington, making a lasting impact on the Northeast Corridor. In addition to his business ventures, Samuel purchased several homes, apartment complexes, and commercial properties.

Samuel was a trailblazer and a cornerstone of his community, known for his generosity and for never meeting a stranger. He was always eager to help others. Samuel enjoyed playing bid whist, was a devoted KU basketball and Chiefs fan, loved tending to his flowers and yard, and cherished spending quality time with his family-giving each child and grandchild special attention both individually and as a group.

Samuel departed this life on December 25, 2025. He is preceded in death by his lovely wife Mary Lee Byers, Mother Genora Byers, Father Arthur Neal Byers, Son Arthur Joseph Byers, Daughter Vanessa Nichols, Son Alfred Brand, Grandson Samuel Byers III, brother Vern Lee Byers, and Sister Sercilee Perkins.
