Reflecting the life of
Ruth H. Wordlow McCallop
Ruth H. Wordlow McCallop was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on September 21, 1918 to the late Herbert and Elvy Wordlow. She was big sister to the late Dorothy E. Byrd and a brother. Her parents and siblings all preceded her in death.
In 1936 she graduated from Manual Training High School and then shortly after the family moved to Kansas City, MO in 1937. She furthered her education attending Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, KS and graduated in 1941. It was here that she met her other half, the late William J. McCallop Sr; they married on June 8, 1947 and to this union their only son, William J. McCallop Jr. was born in 1959.
The newlyweds pursued a higher education traveling to California where Ruth received her Master of Science in Education from the University of Southern California in 1956. Shortly after settling back home in Shawnee, KS Ruth started her teaching career in Special Education, retiring in 1981.
Very much a devoted mother, grandmother, and auntie she spent her time indulging in her hobbies of gardening (Naked Lady Lilies, Roses, and Elephant Ears were her favorite), crocheting, and spending time with her family sharing stories if she wasn’t attending to the duties of her memberships.
Aunt Ruth as she was affectionately known, was a member of the Swope Parkway United Christian Church, NAACP, Jack and Jill, lifetime members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., and Saturday Night 16.
Aunt Ruth leaves to cherish her loving memory, her son and daughter-in-law William and Sylvia McCallop; eight grandchildren Shereé Alexander, Quiahnya (Alex) Cain, Alicia (Aaron) Conway; Claude (Courtney) Hawkins, and Anthony Hawkins; ten great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
