Life’s Reflections

Ronald Gregory Marks Sr. aka “COACH”, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2022 at The University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.  He was born on July 17, 1954 in Kansas City, Kansas to Fred Lee Marks Sr. and Ruby Lois Spencer-Marks.  Ronald grew up in the Kansas City, Kansas (Argentine Area).  He accepted Christ and was baptized at Second Metropolitan Baptist Church.

He was educated in the Kansas City, Kansas Public School District attending Stanley Elementary and he graduated from Argentine Junior/Senior High School in 1972.  After High School he joined the United States Marine Corp. in 1972 and served for 4 years.  He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and the Rifle Marksman Badge.  He was Honorable Discharged in 1975, achieving the rank of PRIVATE.  After the United States Marine Corp he attended Los Angeles Harbor Junior College in San Pedro, California where he received an Associate Degree in Automotive Technology.

Ronald began working for the United States Postal Service as a Custodian for 3 years.  He continued his custodial skills at Yellow Freight Corporation, Trinity A.M.E. Church, Truman Medical Center and at Wyandotte High School (USD 500 School District) where he was the Night Lead Custodian for 12 years. He retired from the USD 500 School District in July of 2021. After his hard work throughout the years “Coach” was ready to enjoy life, relax and travel.

Ronald aka “Coach” was involved in several aspects of coaching in the Kansas City, Kansas area which included; Football, Baseball, Wyandotte H.S. Girls Freshman Basketball Team and the AAU KC Runnin Rebels. He was called to serve people and he loved his family to the fullest. A lot of young men and women looked up to him as a “Father Figure”. He was also the Spencer Family President for several years.

Ronald married Karen M. Marshall-Marks on March 22, 1974 in Kansas City, Kansas. They were married for 32 years and to this Union Three children were born. Ronald enjoyed watching all kinds of sports but, his favorites were the Kansas City Royals, K-State Wildcats and his beloved Kansas City Chiefs.  It was never a dull moment with “Coach” and he brighten the room and made everyone smile and laugh when he was around.  He really loved spending time with his grandchildren and they loved him back.

Ronald was preceded in death by his Grandmother; Georgia Spencer Dobbins, his parents; Fred Marks Sr. and Ruby Marks. His Siblings; Harold Holmes Jr.; Fred Marks Jr.; Richard Marks Sr. and Zelma Marks.

Ronald is survived by his former spouse Karen Marks of Roeland Park, Kansas; His Daughters; Rhonda Granger of Manhattan Beach, California; Talisha Smith (Anthony) of Plant City, Florida; Raweena Marks of Roeland Park, Kansas; and His Son Ronald Marks Jr. (Kyra) of Odessa, Florida; His Five Sisters; Beverly Holmes-Mitchell;  Carol Brown;  Ruth Easterwood;  Alice Spears (Richard) and Shirley Marks of Kansas City, Kansas and Three Brothers; Arthur Marks (Joyce); Robert Marks (Shelia) and Phillip Marks of Kansas City, Kansas; His Ten Grandchildren; Lexxus; Romadd; Edward; Christian; Caleb; Dash; Kingston; Koen; Zakila; AJ and one Great-Grandchild; Rylee. His cousins; nieces; nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
