Robert Eugene Woodard Jr., affectionately known as "Sarge," passed away peacefully at his home in Kansas City, Kansas, on April 12, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on January 18, 1939, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Robert E. Woodard Sr. and Odel Small Woodard, Robert grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, and was a proud graduate of Washington High School.
Service and Career
A man of discipline and dedication, Robert served his country in the United States Army for 12 years during the Vietnam Era. During his service, he earned the National Defense Service Medal and was recognized as an Expert Rifleman, ultimately achieving the rank of Sergeant (E5) before receiving an honorable discharge.
Following his military service, Robert built a long career as a crane operator for KC Structural Steel. His hard-working nature also led him to roles with the railroad and the BPU Light Company in Kansas City, where he was known for his reliability and skill.
Life and Legacy
In 1980, Robert married the love of his life, Earnestine, in Kansas City, Kansas. Together, they shared 46 years of a devoted and happy marriage.
Robert was a man of many talents and vibrant interests. He possessed a sharp mind for chess, cards, and dominoes, tennis, swimming, and a soul that loved to dance and play the piano. An avid outdoorsman, he took great pride in his lawn and garden. Robert was a man of impeccable style who took great pride in his appearance; he was rarely seen without one of his signature 82nd Airborne hats, which he wore with immense pride.
Robert was preceded in death by his mother, father, eldest son, sister, brother-in-law, and nephew.
Robert is survived by his spouse Earnestine Woodard of Kansas City, KS; his sons, Michael and Andre’, daughters, Robin, Tiffany, Althea, and Rhonda. His brother Vernon (Dee Woodard of KC, KS; his 6 grandchildren, his nieces and nephews; a host of other relatives and friends.
