Othella Victoria Dupree started life on August 4th, 1928, as Othella V. Creal and was the second of eight children born to Huey Creal, Sr. and Hattie B. Tolefree - Creal. Her first and elder sibling sister was Margaret Creal (Pollard), followed by Huey Creal, Jr., Emma Lee Creal (Daniels), Elsie Mae Creal, LaVel Creal, Delores Creal (Lindesay) and Hazel Creal (Ortega).
Othella spent her formative years in the Quindaro area and received her primary education through Vernon Elementary School and Northeast Jr. High School. She attended and graduated from Sumner High School. While growing up in Quindaro she most enjoyed attending church and roller skating at Western University on 26th Street. She also expressed fond memories of attending tap dancing classes along with her sister Margaret.
Soon after finishing high school Othella met the love of her life in Thomas Jefferson Dupree. TJ, as he was called, had recently moved to Kansas City from New Edinburg, Arkansas. They quickly joined in holy matrimony in 1947 and to this union four children were born; Lazier V. Dupree, Yvonne Dupree (Wheeler), Lawanne Dupree (Jackson) and Thomas Dupree, Jr..
Othella and TJ were devoted parents to their children and gave much of their time and attention to them and to their grandchildren.
Othella found Christ at an early age and was a dedicated and devoted member of the historic Allen Chapel AME Church for 72 plus years and actively participated in the Cathedral Choir, Benevolent Club and the L.A. McCampbell Women’s Missionary Society. She was a Sunday School teacher at Allen Chapel for many years and sang in the choir for more than 60 years. She also expressed pride, reverence and jubilation at being baptized a second time by Rev. Russell Davis on January 2nd 1972. Othella was a member of the Steward Board at Allen Chapel AME for many years until she was compelled to cut back on much of her activities in order to devote time and attention to care for her ailing husband.
Othella prided herself on being a homemaker. In her earlier years she worked for Dr. Alexander and in the KCK School District’s food services department at Vance elementary School. She retired from the KCK school district after 14years.
After a brief stay at the Overland Park Regional Hospital and the Ignite Medical Resort, Othella passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 6th 2024 surrounded by family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, TJ, her mother and father, and all of her children except for Lazier.
