Melvin James Smith III

Life’s Reflection

Melvin James Smith III was born on August 13, 1942 in Kansas City, Kansas to Francis W. Smith and Lizabeth Noland Smith.  Melvin grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, and graduated from Sumner High School in 1960.  After high school he attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with emphasis in Science and Math.

Melvin was drafted into the United States Army and served 3 years during the Vietnam War.  He received an honorable discharge.  He began working for the Kansas City, Kansas Public School District 500 as a teacher.  He worked for 31 years, retiring in 1998.  Melvin was involved in The Northeast Optimist Club, and was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.   He loved to play Dominoes and Pinochle.

In 1974, Melvin married Zella Mae Farr in Kansas City, Kansas.  They were happily married for 45 years.

Melvin was preceded in death by his father, Francis; mother, Lizabeth; brother, Wendell Maurice Smith and sister, Saundra Juanita Smith.

Left to cherish Melvin’s memory is his wife of 45 years, Zella of Kansas City, Kansas; his sons, Michael C. Smith and Melvin J. Smith IV both of Kansas City, Kansas; his daughter, Monica Juanita Smith Ordonez of Ecuador, South America; his grandchildren, Michael C. Smith II and Maleek James Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
