Mary Elizabeth (Kelley) Kendall was the third of four siblings born to Ira and Estella Kelley of Weston, MO.
She was raised and grew up in that tobacco and whiskey producing small town on the other side of the Missouri river across from Leavenworth, KS. Her family split up because of education restrictions and financial hardships. Mary, her sister Josephine and her mother, took refuge in St. Joseph, MO.; where she finished her high school years and attended a year at Lincoln University at Jefferson City. However, the continuing health and hardships of her mother Estella and her younger sister Josephine; she had to drop out and all moved to Kansas City, KS to live with relatives. Her dedication and devotion to her mother and her sister led them to strive. Mary embraced and leaned on her faith; consequently, joining the Seventh day Adventist church and becoming more of a devout Christian.
In 1957 she met Garret H. Kendall, and they were united in marriage for 16 yrs. Even though they had no kids, "Auntie" as she was affectionally Known, was like a second mother to most of the Kids she knew. In other words, she was amicable, caring, and loving to all, especially to her nieces, Nephews and Cousins children. “Auntie” was Known for passing, out spearmint gum, remembering birthdays, and reciting scriptures; Always giving praises to our Lord. After the passing of her husband and later in her life, she joined Southside Christian Church and taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. Moreover, continuing to serve and obey His word.
Auntie also remained gain fully employed after her husband's death and retired from red from the City Hall of KCMO, after 26 years of faithful service. Despite never learning how to drive a car, she religiously used the bus services and walked to and from her job and to shop. She would walk at least six blocks a day and said that she did not have any ache or pain in her body, much after she retired.
The legacy to the family will be her unwavering faith and discipline lifestyle; that allowed her to be a nurturer, productive, and highly esteemed person. Job well done and we believe and know that God will receive you with welcoming arms. Amen.
