Melvin Franklin Minor Sr January 4th, 1944 – November 27th, 2023
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a cherished patriarch, Melvin Franklin Minor Sr, who departed this world on November 27th, 2023, at the KUMED center surrounded by his loving family.
Born on January 4th, 1944, Melvin was the fourth son of Raymond T. Minor and Melwee Hopkins and the protective big brother to two little sisters. His early years were spent in the heart of Kansas City, KS, initially on Armstrong and later on Quindaro from 1956. Melvin graduated from Wyandotte High School (Go Bulldogs) and continued his education at KCK Junior College, where he proudly majored in “Bid Whist.”
In his youth, Melvin embraced life with vigor and had a wide circle of loyal friends. A lover of the open road, he owned and rode motorcycles as a proud member of Vulture’s motorcycle club. Beyond his adventurous spirit, Melvin was a responsible and industrious man. He worked as a dedicated welder at KC Structural Steel before embarking on a remarkable 38-year career with Proctor and Gamble, where he eventually retired.
In 1969, Melvin married, and from their union, they were blessed with two beautiful children, Rodney and Melwee Minor. In a testament to enduring love, Melvin later married Karen Donnell on January 7th, 1983, and celebrated 45 years of marriage with the love of his life. From this union, four children were born: Melvin Jr, Meloney, Markus, and Angel Minor.
Melvin was a pillar of strength, a man with a heart of gold who fiercely loved and protected his family. He had a passion for life and enjoyed hobbies such as dominos, drag racing, and horseshoes. But above all, his greatest joy was being with his kids, grandkids, and family. He shared his love for dominos, imparting the strategy and camaraderie of the game to those around him. His true happiness came from spending quality time with his grandchildren, teaching them life's lessons and even how to count to ten in Spanish. Melvin also found solace and joy in those quiet moments fishing by the water—unless, of course, he was shooting at the fish! He also enjoyed teaching his children how to shoot/target practice while visiting his big brother in Tonganoxie. Melvin's love for fishing was undoubtedly a highlight, showcasing his unique blend of patience and, well, marksmanship.
Together with his wife, he was member of the First Baptist Church of Quindaro.
Melvin leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth, survived by his sons Melvin Minor Jr, Markus Minor, and Rodney Minor (Tonja), and three daughters Melwee, Meloney, and Angel Minor. He is also remembered fondly by his two sisters Sharon Gooch and Darlene Banks (Curtis). Melvin's cherished grandchildren, Malik, Kanissa, Cali, Messiah, Melvin III, Jayla, Jaylen, Justin Jr, Paisley, Major, and Nicholas, will carry his memory forward.
In addition to his immediate family, Melvin is mourned by numerous nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Melwee Minor, siblings Thomas, Richard, and Clifton Minor.
Melvin Franklin Minor Sr will be remembered not only for his hard work, but for the love he showered upon his family, the wisdom he shared with friends, and the indelible mark he left on the community he so dearly embraced. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, let us celebrate a life well-lived and honor the timeless legacy he leaves behind.
