Life’s Reflection
MARY LEE BYERS born July 17, 1933 to Elizabeth Sloan Wilson in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Mary was an only child but loved her cousins and felt as if most of them were her siblings, especially her aunt Wilma Wilson who was raised along with her.
Mary accepted Christ early in life. She attended Uganda Martyrs grade school and received her diploma from Dunbar High School. After graduating Mary moved to Kansas City, Kansas where she met the love of her life, Samuel Byers Sr. To this union four children were born, Samuel Byers Jr., Vanessa Nichols, Elizabeth Atkins, and Arthur Joseph Byers. Mary and Samuel also fostered six brothers, Albert, Alfred, Leander, Eugene, Arthur, and Michael Brand.
Mary was known throughout the community as Mrs. B, she and her husband owned and operated three successful liquor stores and multiple real estate holdings.
Mary is preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth Wilson; her father, Woodrow Wilson; her son, Arthur Byers; and her grandson, Samuel Byers III.
Mary departed this life on May 18, 2021 and leaves to cherish her memory a loving and devoted husband of 69 years, Samuel Byers Sr.; Samuel Byers Jr. (Pamela); Vanessa Nichols (Marvin); and Elizabeth Atkins; 7 grandchildren, Taiasha Nichols; Sean Byers (Candice); LaVeeda Cannady (Evan); Traci Estell; Michael Jones (Jessica); David Jones (Jamera); Ronald Boggess Jr. (Jessica); 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
