Marlene (Miller) Washington was born to John and Clara Miller on March 23, 1933 in Kansas City, Kansas. She attended the old Grant Elementary School, Northeast Junior High School and Sumner High School in the Kansas City, Kansas area.
She married Mr. Lehman A. Washington on Jan 24, 1955. They were married for 64 years until Mr. Washington’s passing July 6, 2019. They had 5 children, daughters Sharon L. Hall and Pamela L. Washington, son Orlando M. “Lanny” Washington and 2 sons preceded in death Terrell Stiles and Lehman (Pie) Washington, Jr.
Marlene worked for the A&P Food Chain for 22 years where she was a member of the A&P Retail Union until the company left Kansas City. She then worked as a Para Educator for the Kansas City Kansas Public Schools, USD 500 for 15 years. Through her employment she was also a member of KPERS (Kansas Public Employee Retirement Services).
Marlene was very active with her church community. She attended Pleasant Green Baptist Church where she served in various roles, including an educator with the Pleasant Green Community School, Sunday School Educator/Leader, various committees, and her most honored and treasured role as President of the Senior Usher Board for over 50 years.
She loved shopping, especially for her fellow usher board members so they could be the best-dressed ushers in Kansas City.
Marlene leaves to mourn her passing daughters Sharon L. Hall and Pamela L. Washington, son Orlando “Lanny” Washington, 3 granddaughters Tawana Smith, Jynene Redfield and Gaynia Hairston, 5 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.
