Lucy Gethers Obituary

Her Story

Lucy Montgomery Gethers was born on September 8, 1936 in Rome, GA to Eulas and Clara Shropshire Montgomery. She was the first of nine children born to this union.  She accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of the Springfield Baptist Church in Rome, Ga.  She graduated from Main High School in 1954. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Science degree in General Science and Home Economics from Tennessee State University.  In 1961, she moved to Kansas City, KS where she worked as an elementary school teacher for more than thirty-four years.  She joined the Metropolitan Baptist Temple and was a faithful member singing in the Young Adult and the Adult choirs.  She was the Director of Christian Education and she was a member of Family Life Ministry. She was a lifetime member of the NAACP and she served on the Board of Directors for the Friends of Yates Organization. She was also a member of the Wyandotte County Association of Retired School Personnel.  She worked with the McKinney-Vento Liaison, and Parent’s University. Of the many community projects that she worked on, she enjoyed working to aid and uplift the homeless and to provide assistance to battered and abused women.

Aside from her humanitarian endeavors, Lucy loved attending numerous social events.  She was generally in attendance at the Friends of Yates year-end Gala.   She was also a frequent attendee at the NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet.  In addition, she enjoyed the opera, plays, musicals and various museums. Very family oriented, she often participated in organizing and attending family reunions. After the births of her granddaughters, Breeanna and Ashley Wilson whom she affectionately referred to as “Grandma’s Girl” and “Princess”, she involved herself in helping to rear the next generation.  She used her vast experience in teaching to educate and expose them to educational and cultural experiences. She was present at the births of granddaughters, Breeanna and Ashley. Therefore, it was important for her to spend every birthday with the girls from then on. They were the joy of her life and she attended their dance recitals, spring shows, cheerleading and drill team performances, graduations, and used any other reason to visit them. She was everyone’s friend and big sister. We thought of her as the Queen.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Joseph, Arthur, Walter and Eulas Montgomery.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her devoted and loving husband Edwin J. Gethers of Kansas City, Kansas, two daughters, Jacquelyn Gethers of Kansas City, Kansas, Jocelyn Wilson (Michael), Richardson, Texas, Two granddaughters, Breeanna Wilson and Ashley Wilson. She also leaves three brothers and one sister, William Montgomery (Betty), Rome Georgia, Larry Montgomery (Marie), San Antonio, Texas, Harry Montgomery (Debra), Rome, Georgia, and Sister Martha Roberts, Rome, Georgia.
