Leroy Kelly Fields

His Story

Mr. Leroy Kelly Fields, 75, was born on February 20, 1944, to Agnes N. (Humbert) Fields and Frank Sylvester Fields Sr., in Leavenworth, Kansas.  Leroy is the sixth son born to this union.

On Monday, March 18, 2019, our beloved Leroy peacefully transitioned from his earthly life, into life everlasting with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Leroy is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and one sister: Frank S. Fields Jr., Charles F. Fields Sr., Clyde U. Fields, George C. Fields, and Doris L. McDaniel.

Leroy was raised and deeply rooted in the church.  At an early age, he was baptized and spiritually fed at the historic Independent Baptist Church in Leavenworth, Kansas.  He worshipped under the leadership of the late pastors, W.G. Williams, and T. Franklin Strange. If you knew Leroy, you knew he had a personal relationship with the Lord.

Leroy was a proud, 1962, “Pioneer” graduate of Leavenworth Senior High School. Following high school, Leroy joined the United States Army and successfully completed basic training. 

In 1967, while serving in the Army, Leroy returned to his hometown to marry his “best friend,” Norma J. Bobo of Leavenworth, Kansas.  To this union, he became the proud father of two adorable little girls.

Leroy expanded his military career by simultaneously, serving in the National Guard as a Reservist.  In 1972, he was re-activated into the Army and became a Drill Instructor.  Based upon his outstanding work performance, he quickly advanced to work in other areas of service, which earned him awards and declarations of recognition.  In 1981, Leroy received an honorable discharge from the United States Army. This successful career paved inroads to his gaining employment with the Kansas State Board of Corrections, in the capacity of a State Correctional Officer/Administrator.  His standards exemplified an above reproach aptitude, which warranted his respect before the US Federal Penitentiary System, and the US Bureau of Corrections.

Additionally, his vast work experiences and overall work ethic were noted by the Illinois (Chicago) Department of Corrections Diagnostic Facility, where he worked for many years.

Truly, Leroy was an “All American.”  As a member of the American Legion, (Local Branch of Leavenworth, Kansas) for many years, he enjoyed attending and facilitating many of their civic and social events. 

In his spare time, he enjoyed watching basketball, and football games, attending parties, celebrating holiday’s, listening to old school R&B music, and tapping his toes to a bit of smooth Jazz.  A few of his favorite music greats were the Temptations, O’Jay’s and one of his “newer favorites” Boyz II Men.  We can’t forget how he loved watching old westerns and forever being “Mischievous.”  Nevertheless, we enjoyed every bit of it.  Moreover, Leroy deeply loved his family.  His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the apple of his eye and the sunshine in his heart.

The infectious smile of our beloved, Leroy Kelly Fields, will never be forgotten.  The precious love of his memory will continue to thrive in the heart of his best friend Norma J. Fields of Leavenworth, KS; and within the hearts of his daughters, Letitia D. Fleming (Leighton) Waco, TX; Bridgette R. Fields of Leavenworth, KS; Knenosha Fields-Page (Demetrius) Chicago, Il; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren all of Leavenworth, Kansas; brothers, Floyd E. Fields (Jane) Leavenworth, KS; Ralph J. Fields (Pat) Honolulu, HI; Donald R. Fields and special brother, Victor Ruiz both of New Jersey, NJ; sisters-in-law, Andrea Fields Lansing, KS and Christine Fields of Rochester, NY; a host of nephews, nieces and many, many friends.
