Lemuel Laws Bess, Sr. passed away on September 30, 2024, at Providence Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. He was born on June 10, 1939, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, to Rev. JB Bess and Lovie Gean Robinson.
Lem was drafted into the military on January 18, 1963, and had tours in Vietnam and Korea. After 31 years of honorable service rising to the rank of Sergeant Major, he retired from the military. Following his retirement, he worked as a leader at GMB.
On March 28, 1960, Lem married Barbara in Leavenworth, and they were married for 64 years. Lem enjoyed reading, visiting the library, and generously supporting many charities.
He was preceded in death by his brother Jessie, father Rev. J.B. Bess Sr., mother Lovie Gean, son Lemuel, and granddaughter Juanita.
Lem is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons Lemuel Jr., Darryl, Kalvin, and Jesse; daughters Sheila and Regina (with her husband Karl); his brother Richard (with wife Peaches); and sisters Earlene, Shirley, and Olee. He is also survived by his grandchildren Khari, Shari, Shenia, Morgan and Essence, along with 17 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
