Lawrence (Larry) A. Jackson, Jr. age 76 died on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at Select Specialty Hospital following a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born December 16, 1946 in Kansas City, Kansas as the only child to parents Mildred Jackson and Lawrence Jackson, Sr. who both preceded him in death.
He attended Northeast Junior High and Wyandotte High School (Class of ’64) where he played on the boy’s basketball team. He went on to attend Park College where he earned a degree in Psychology. He also briefly attended Washburn Law School in Topeka.
Larry had a lifelong desire to be an entrepreneur and started several small businesses during his lifetime. As a young man he owned and operated several small businesses including a liquor store, JAM Distributors a beauty and barber supply, JAM Productions a concert promoter for acts such as Roy Ayers, Ubiquity Starbooty and Jazz musicians Hubert and Debra Laws. He was one of the first minority-owned businesses to have an office on 18th and Vine in the Lincoln Building. His business career included founding a minority owned marketing firm that produced the first Black Visitors Guide for the City of Kansas City. He also did marketing work for the Missouri Lottery and several Fortune 500 companies. He retired after a long career as a substitute teacher specializing in serving kids with special needs in the Kansas City, Kansas school district.
Larry loved writing, watching and discussing sports, and spending time with close friends and family.
Larry is survived by his three sons, Sean (Cierra) Gibson of Kansas City, Scott C. (Hon. Rhonda K.) Mason of Olathe, Kansas and Damon (Tamika) Jackson of Independence, Missouri. Eight grandchildren, Camry Gibson, Taylor Gibson, Ashley Gibson, Sean Gibson Jr., Bryce Mason, Aaron “A.J.” Mason, Damon Jackson Jr. and Danny Jackson. He also leaves behind several extended family and close friends.
