The World lost a great woman on December 23, 2023, when Ludelia was called home by God. She was born on February 23, 1935, in Columbus, Arkansas to Myrtle and Ras Cheatham. She was a second-generation social worker, Ludelia carried on her mother Myrtle Cheatham's career. Her entire life has been devoted to serving others.
Ludelia was an extraordinarily hard worker. She had a career in nursing at KU Medical Center before returning to school to complete her master's degree at Emporia State College and her bachelor's degree in sociology at Park College. Following her graduation, she devoted her time to serving her community. She assisted in establishing a drug rehabilitation facility in Kansas City, Kansas, and oversaw the food program where she worked diligently to feed people in need at her church St. Peters Methodist Church, where she had been a devoted member for more than 60 years.
She had a very giving and loving heart and would help anyone who was in need, even if it was just a kind word of encouragement. She always had a positive outlook on life and her beautiful smile warmed your heart and always made you feel better.
A loving mother to her children: James "Buzzy" Block (Diane), Darrell “Rickey” Block, Dwayne "Punchie" Block (Patrice), Kevin "Dickey" Block, Wendell Cowan, Christy Cowan and Jim Cowan.
A loving grandmother to her grandkids: Ta’Hera Kates (John), Rodney Block (La Tonya), Alexander Block (Janae), Brittney Block, Xavier Block, Kelli Williams (Jakim), and D'Heardra Block. Both Xavier and D'Headre preceded her in death.
She was also a beloved wife to husbands Elwood Block and Charles Cowan, who also preceded her in death.
Ludelia is survived by her sister Iola Matson and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends, who share in the mourning of her death.
In her spare time, Ludelia loved to travel and loved her local sports teams, especially the Kansas City Royals. Most importantly she was proud of and loved her boys and grandkids, whom she loved to introduce to everyone.
Ludelia was a kind, generous, and loving woman who will be missed by all who knew her. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
