Jewell Washington, 88, passed away on 30, July 2025 at Olathe Hospice House in Olathe, KS. She was born on December 6, 1936, in Toledo, Texas to stepfather Johnny Travis and Essie Joiner
Jewell grew up in Newton, Texas where she met her husband to be Wallace Washington and moved to Kansas City, Ks and got married. From their union they had three children. Ora Washington, Wallrine Washington (Freeman) and Kevin Washington. Jewell worked hard to make sure her kids always were taken care of. She worked as a cook for many years at S&H restaurant where people lined up to get her delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner. After many years as a cook, she decided to start working in clothing factories all with the understanding that she was working to take care of her family and so her kids would have a better life. After getting married she converted to her husband’s religion of Catholic and made sure her husband and kids attended mass every Sunday. Through her faith she and her husband were able to raise her kids and make sure they all graduated high school. After that task had been completed, she decided she wanted to also graduate high school and started taking classes to get her GED. She successfully completed and once again accomplished her task in 1982, and all her kids applauded as they saw her finally walk across the stage to get her diploma.
One of Jewell’s hobbies was sewing, and she was often found in front of a sewing machine where she created many of her one of kind garments. Coats, slacks, and prom dresses were just a few of the items her kids were proud to wear and say my mom made this for me.
Jewell was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years Wallace, her mother Essie Travis and stepfather Johnny Travis, her siblings JT Joiner, Lonnie Travis, Leonard Travis, Johnny Travis Jr. (Doll Baby).
