James J. Grandberry was born on September 12, 1940 in Williston, Tennessee to James and Ola (Smith) Grandberry. James and his huge family of brothers and sisters grew up in Rossville, Tennessee, until James moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1962 to care for extended family. Soon after he met and married Betty M. Mitchell, the two were married for many years. During this time James began his 15-year career as a foundry worker at S&G Metals. He then transferred to Fredericks Manufacturing where he remained until retirement. James was a hard worker but loved entertaining friends and family at his home. James was also known as “Chuck-a-Luck” because of his robust spirit. He showed a great since of pride in caring for his family whom he loved very much.
James J. Grandberry, 79, passed away on August 19, 2020 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
James J. Grandberry was preceded in death by his parents, James, and Ola (Smith) Grandberry; and one sister, Louise Barnes
James J. Grandberry was survived by sons, James C. Mitchell-Grandberry (Jamita); Gary K. Grandberry; Rodney Simpson; of Kansas City, Missouri; and Melvin Pitts (Gail) of Memphis, Tennessee; daughter, Doris Trice (Donny) of Sugarland, Texas; brothers, William T. Grandberry (Nellie); and John Grandberry of Kansas City, Missouri; Joe Grandberry of Galloway, Tennessee; Lee Quincy Grandberry of Memphis, Tennessee; and Maurice Grandberry (Margaret) of Brown Deer, Wisconsin; sisters, Alma Sanders (Charles) of Los Angles, California; Margaret Keyes of San Francisco, California; Mary Anne Finnie of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Lorice Batts (Glen) of Montclair, Virginia; grandchildren, Jalyn Cheree Key (Thomas); Jayme Marie Mitchell; and Garion Dorian Grandberry; along with a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
