Life Reflection for Helen Shaw
Helen Jean Hopkins Shaw passed away April 8, 2022, at Medical Lodge Post-Acute Care Center Kansas City, Kansas.
Helen was born on October 16, 1927, in Kansas City, Kansas to Harry and Thelma Hawkins Hopkins.
She was baptized at Metropolitan Baptist Church Kansas City, Kansas, where she was a member for several years before moving to Kansas City, Missouri and joining Rosser Simpson CME.
She grew up in Kansas City Kansas. She graduated from Sumner High School Kansas City, Kansas in 1945.
After High School she attended Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kansas where she received her Associated Degree in education.
She decided to work as a School Secretary for many years. She retired to care for her husband.
Helen was involved in many organizations NAACP, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority for over 50 years, she was a life member, and Zeta Dove. She also was an Amicae Sponsor for many years.
Upon moving to Kansas City, Missouri she attended Rosser Simpson CME Church where she was member for over 50 years. She held many positions in the Church, Head Usher, superintendent of Sunday school, Church Secretary and on the Stewardess Board. Helen loved teaching Sunday School...That was her highlight of the week.
After the closing of Rosser Simpson CME Church, she rejoined Metropolitan Baptist Church Kansas City, Kansas.
Helen met her husband, Charles Shaw at Rosser Simpson CME Church. They married on February 25, 1966, in Kansas City, Missouri. They were married 24 years before his passing in 1990. Helen enjoyed her life and her family.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents: father, Harry Hopkins; and mother, Thelma (Hopkins) Jackson; stepson, Don Shaw; and grandson, Darryl Shaw.
Helen is survived by Charles Shaw Jr. stepson of Kansas City, Missouri; Carolyn Smith, stepdaughter of Phoenix, Arizona; Robert Jackson stepbrother; grandchildren, April (Cordell) Hudson; Jason (Adrienne) Shaw; and LaNora (Eric) Mintz; 19 great-grandchildren; and her cousin and caretaker Terry (John) Poke. Besides Gayle Nelson; and Herman (Marquetta) Glass; Carolyn Cook; and Johnny Officer; she also leaves other relatives, and close friends that will miss her.
