Hazel Louise (MOORE) Holmes, age 102, passed away early Thursday morning June 15, 2023 at Hospice House and Palliative Care in KCMO. Hazel was matriarch and the oldest surviving 4th Generation member of the Moore and Holmes families.
Hazel’s Homegoing Service will be held on Monday, June 26, 2023 at the Eighth Street Baptist Church, 1420 North 8th Street, Kansas City, KS. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. and Services will begin at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Donald Slack II, Pastor. Thatcher’s Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
A lifelong resident of KCK, Hazel was born on January 30, 1921 to Marjorie and Edward T. Moore, Sr., and she was the second of their four children. Her siblings were the late Dorothy Moore Brooks, Ruth Moore Brown and Edward T. Moore, Jr..
Hazel Louise Moore was united in holy matrimony to Preston Leon “Choc” Holmes on October 21, 1942 and to that union four children were born: Preston, Patricia, Stephanie, and Patrick Holmes. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Preston (“Choc”); by two of her children, Patricia and Patrick; and by her great-granddaughter, Heaven Bey.
A product of the KCK public schools, Hazel attended Douglass Elementary, Northeast Jr. High and graduated from Sumner High School. She attended Pittsburg State College for a short time before working for 30 years as a seamstress in the KCMO garment industry.
Under the spiritual leadership of the late Rev. I. H. Henderson, Sr., Hazel accepted Christ at a young age and remained a life-long member of the Eighth Street Baptist Church, KCK. She worked with the Cradle Roll toddlers for several years and was later a faithful member of the mission department, serving as Ruth Circle’s first President, back in the 1960s. During the church’s 130th Anniversary, Hazel L. Holmes was honored as the oldest surviving church member --- with her membership having spanned nearly 90 years !
Left to mourn her passing are Hazel’s two surviving children: Preston Holmes (wife, Paula), (CA); and Stephanie Holmes Jones (KCK). She is also survived by 7 grandchildren: Brandon Holmes (Clarice) and Erica Holmes (KCK);
Naimah Holmes (NY); Patrisse Mays (KCMO); Toure’ (Edna) Summey (NJ); Trenton Hodge (LA), and Mario Holmes (KCMO); and Hazel’s “fantabulous 38 ” --- her 20 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren, as well as, a host of other loving family members and friends.
