Harold Joseph "Joe" Strickland, age 92, passed away peacefully on October 23rd, 2024, at his
son’s home in Kansas City, Kansas. Joe was born on September 6, 1932, in Kansas City,
Kansas, to the late Roosevelt and Mable Strickland. He grew up in the Argentine area and was
the third oldest of his five siblings. He graduated from Sumner High School in Kansas City,
Kansas, in 1950.
After high school, Joe moved to Chicago to live with his cousins and, in 1952, joined the United
States Air Force. He served his country with honor during the Korean War and was recognized
with the "Good Conduct Medal." After his military service, Joe attended Kansas University.
In the 1960s, Joe ran KC Bowl Bowl, a popular bowling alley in Kansas City, Kansas. During this
time, he also began working at Douglas State Bank. It was while working at the bank that Joe
discovered his entrepreneurial spirit. Recognizing the community’s need for accessible and
reliable childcare services, he opened Peppermint Child Care Center in 1965. Known for its
innovative approach, including providing transportation for families, Peppermint Child Care
became a cornerstone of the community, serving countless families for over 35 years. To this
day, there are thousands of individuals who proudly call themselves "Pepperminters" for the
lasting impact the center had on their lives.
Joe married Gwenn Strickland, and together they had two sons, Joseph Strickland II and
Jayson Strickland. Later in life, he found a loving and steadfast life partner in Pearl Copeland.
Together, they shared over 30 years of happiness. Pearl was not only his companion but also a
loving and dependable confidante to Joe and his family.
Known for his quick wit and humor, Joe had a knack for making those around him laugh and feel
at ease. Whether it was a lighthearted remark or a cleverly timed joke, he always knew how to
lift the spirits of family, friends, and even strangers. His sense of humor was a hallmark of his
personality, endearing him to everyone he met.
Joe had a passion for bringing people together. He frequently opened the doors of Peppermint
Child Care Center to host celebrations and community gatherings, creating a welcoming space
for family and friends to fellowship and support one another. Joe’s dedication to his family, his
community, and his business established him as a pillar of strength and unity.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Roosevelt and Mable Strickland, and his siblings
Opal Mae Johnson, James Strickland, Jerome Strickland, Mary Collins, and Eddie Strickland.
He is survived by his two sons, Joseph Strickland II and Jayson Strickland, his devoted life
partner Pearl Copeland, and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Joe’s legacy of service, love, and dedication will forever be remembered by the countless lives
he touched throughout his 92 years. He leaves behind a legacy of family, faith, and community
that will be cherished for generations to come. His humor and warmth will continue to bring
smiles to the faces of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
