Frederick Brown Powell, a beloved son, brother, and friend, passed away on April 3, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, talent, and service. Born on February 18, 1953 in Kansas City, Kansas, he was the sixth child and third son born to Doreen and Robert Powell.
After graduating from Sumner High School (1971) in Kansas City, Kansas, Frederick went on to build a life defined by creativity, skill, and heart. A brilliant musician, he found his true voice in the soulful notes of the trumpet, captivating everyone who had the privilege of hearing him play. But his talents didn’t stop there—he also had a natural gift for working with his hands.
Frederick excelled as both an auto mechanic and a construction worker, known for his ability to repair, build, and restore with care and precision. Whether fixing a neighbor’s car or lending a hand on a project, he gave freely of his time and skills. He was a man of quiet strength and deep generosity, always ready to help and never seeking recognition.
His lively spirit brought joy to every room he entered. He loved to laugh, tell stories, and be surrounded by the people he loved most. A fierce Bid Whist competitor, Frederick played not just for the win, but for the fun and connection it brought. His presence was magnetic, full of warmth, full of life, and impossible to forget.
Though his absence leaves a deep void, we take comfort in knowing he is now reunited with loved ones who went before him. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Teresa Smith, Vivian Powell and Chester Powell.
Frederick leaves behind sister Brenda Gradford (Samuel) of St. Louis; brothers Robert Powell Jr of Kansas City, KS, Clyde Powell (Janra) of Tulsa, OK and Bruce Powell (Debra) of Seatle, WA; nephews Richard Powell, Edward Powell, Brandon Gradford, Robert Powell, Bruce Powell, Randall Powell and Russell; nieces Delores Kelli Worrill, Althea Lynn Morgan and Shelly Gradford; aunts Margie Cooley Hattye Sexton and Janice Sexton and a host of of cousins, great nieces and nephews and friends who loved him dearly. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
