Evelyn Vida (Jackson) Tucker was born on June 16, 1925, in Kansas City, Kansas and entered her eternal reward on June 14, 2023 (just 2 days before her 98th birthday). She was the 7th of nine children born to the union of Warner and Vida (Watkins) Jackson. Her parents, and all of her siblings: 2 in infancy, Ruthetta, Wilburn, Warner Jr. Arthur, Dorothy, and Timothy preceded her in death.
She attended Stowe Elementary, Northeast Jr. High, and graduated from Sumner High School in 1942 where she was an honor student. She loved word puzzles and worked on the KC Star crossword puzzle daily. Evelyn was a fashion ‘diva’ throughout her life. -Willa Mae (Brown) Bobo and Glendora (Brown) Kelso were among her closest friends.
Evelyn was kind, talented and wise. She shared her wisdom about life and the goodness of God, with many young women. She had a talent for knowing the right thing to say or telling you how to get the help you needed. It was always done with love and compassion. Her early career choices included: telephone customer service representative, tax examiner for the IRS, a seamstress and home tax preparer.
Her most cherished career choice was that of homemaker and mother. Throughout her life, Evelyn mothered many relatives’ children. Then, in 1971 she married Mason B. Tucker, and her motherhood dream was realized. She was given the name “Muh” by his 8-year-old daughter, VeNetta Elaine. The name Muh stuck. They were inseparable, showing unconditional mother-daughter love for one another until her passing.
Mason and Evelyn were married for over 50 years prior to his death in March 2022. The Tucker family resided on North 10th Street for over 50 years, before moving to Memphis, TN in 2021 where they were lovingly cared for by VeNetta and her family.
Evelyn had an unshakeable love for the Lord, her family and her church, Strangers Rest Baptist Church, where she had been a member most of her life. Prior to becoming bed-ridden in 2018, she was actively involved at church and served as Sunday School Teacher, Trustee, Mission Study Leader, and Deaconess. She sang a melodious alto voice in the Sanctuary Choir. In September 2022, she was given the honor of being named Deaconess Emeritus. Even after moving to Memphis, she remained steadfast in faithfulness and financial support to the church. She and her caregivers watched Strangers Rest services “live- streamed” every Sunday morning and every 5th Sunday she wore her white mission attire and corsage.
Evelyn, bka Muh, EV and Auntie, will be greatly missed by her family, the SRBC family, and cherished by: her daughter and son-in-law, VeNetta Elaine and Troy Oakley, her grandchildren: Christopher (Tamisha)
Draper, Joshua Draper, Sr. and Justin Borders, all of Memphis, TN, her God-daughter, Dorothy Reed, her Memphis caregiver granddaughters: Vanessa (Coleman) Price and Dereesha Chaney, many loving caregivers in Kansas City; 13 grandchildren,18 great grandchildren and 5 great- great grandchildren, many Jackson Family nieces, nephews, cousins and Tucker relatives throughout the United States including: bonus son Carlton (Sylvia) Johnson, Sr & bonus daughter Josette Tucker, and grandchildren Catherine McCullough, Lamar McCullough, Teri McCullough, Jamilla (Michael) Hoard, Curtis White, Alexander White, Carlton Johnson, Jr., Sheree Johnson, Coco Johnson Adams, and Cortney Johnson.
