Emma Iona (McCurry) Creal

Reflection of Her Life

Emma Iona (McCurry) Creal, 91, was born January 14, 1931, in Kansas City, KS to Sampson and Clara "Thadies" (Arrington) McCurry.  She received her education from the public school system in Kansas City, KS and graduated from Sumner High School in 1949. After high school, she attended 2 years of Junior College where she received her Associates Degree.  She worked for Emery Bird Thayer for many years and later worked as a teacher's assistant in several of Kansas City, Kansas public schools.  Working with youth was the highlight of Emma’s days at school. She later retired to spend time with her two precious children and grandson, Micah.

Emma McCurry married her high school sweetheart, Huey Creal, Jr. in 1951 In Kansas City, KS.  To that union, two beautiful children were born, Huey Leroy and Tammye Sharise.  Emma and Huey were happily married for 58 years before the death of her sweetheart in 2009.

Emma began her young spiritual journey as a member of Trinity A.M.E. Church in Kansas City, KS.  She later became a member of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church where she served as a stewardess and in various ministries for over 65 years.  Emma's most famous pastime and hobby was tending to her flower gardens daily.  Emma had a desire to play the piano and after being taught, she would often entertain her family in her home.

Emma Iona departed this earthly life into eternal reward on May 31, 2022, at her home in Kansas City, KS.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Huey Creal, Jr., her beloved children, Huey Leroy and Tammye Sharise, parents, Sampson & Clara McCurry, her siblings, Sampson McCurry Jr, Thaddeus McCurry, and Carol McCurry. She is survived by her devoted grandson, Micah Davis of Kansas City, KS, sisters, Jewell McLaurian (Julius) of Wichita, KS, Bettie Lewallen (Sterling) of Wichita, KS, and Derieth Rone of Kansas City, KS.
