Dorothy’s Life Reflections
Dorothy Jean Jefferson-Harvey was born on August 26, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee to John L. Jefferson and Emma Belle Dennis. Dorothy grew up in Memphis, Tennessee and later moved to Kansas City, Missouri at the age of 10. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Kansas City, Missouri in 1961.
Dorothy married Wayne Harvey June 18, 1961 in Kansas City, Missouri. They were happily married for 59 years. To this union three children were born, Wayne Jr.; Latisia; and Kevin.
Like many women of that era, she raised her family, made a home for her and Wayne, then decided to further her education by attending Donnelly College in Kansas City, Kansas, where she received an Associate of Arts Degree in Education. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education from Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas, all while working for Economic Opportunity Foundation (EOF) in the Head Start Program, where she eventually became the Director of Head Start. In 2004, Dorothy received a Master’s degree in Education, from American InterContinental University. She continued her career at EOF, where she worked for 47 years before retiring in 2014. Dorothy also received awards and accomplishments while in the Head Start Program, she loved and devoted her time to the multitude of children she taught and mentored over the years. She was involved in The Trinity Group of KC /DFS State of Missouri as a Parent Educator from 2016-2018.
Dorothy was a 42-year member of Bethel Seventh Day Adventist Church, where she served in these ministries, as an usher, a greeter, and in community services. Dorothy enjoyed family, helping others, cooking, and traveling.
Dorothy Jean Harvey, 77, passed away on June 13, 2020 at University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, John L Jefferson; and Emma Belle Dennis-Dodd; stepfather, JD Dodd; and stepbrother, James A. Dorsey.
She leaves to cherish her memory and love her husband, Wayne Harvey Sr. of Kansas City, Kansas; her children, Wayne (Marquita) Harvey Jr.; Latisia (Melvin) Hampton and Kevin Harvey, all of Kansas City, Kansas; her six grandchildren, Chardanee’ Harvey; Darius Hampton; BryAnna (Terrance) Davis; Christian Harvey; Dominique Hampton and Demetrius Hampton; 2 great grandchildren, Brilyn Davis; and Terrance Davis Jr.; her two brothers, Eddie L. Dodd (Marian) and Vernon L. Dodd of Kansas City, Missouri; four sisters, Johnnie Mae Gunnels and Mary E. Dodd Anthony of Kansas City, Missouri; Joyce Ann Johnson and Rita K. Dodd of Houston, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, family members, friends, church family, co-workers and other loved ones.
