Dorothy Elaine Garrett, 75, passed away on May 16, 2023 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Ks. She was born on April 16, 1948 in Kansas City, Ks to Homer and Ruby Jackson Garrett.
Dorothy grew up in Kansas City, Ks. She graduated from Sumner Academy in Kansas City, Ks in 1966. After high school, she attended Wichita State University in Wichita Kansas where she received a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.
After which she attended Emporia State University with a master’s in education. She worked as a teacher for Shawnee Mission Public School for 38 years, she retired in 2010.
She was the first African American teacher hired in the Shawnee Mission School District. Dorothy worked as Superintendent of Sunday School for Olivet & Modeled for many years in the Community area fashion shows. She was the author of several children’s books. Dorothy was president of the last Wichita State Reunion and a prayer leader of a group of friends every morning for years.
Dorothy was a member of Signa Gamma Rho. She enjoyed gardening and planning social events. She also received numerous awards and accomplishments in education and community service.
Dorothy is survived by her son Kenneth Garrett of Dallas TX; her sister Erma Jean Sparks of Pomona California; her nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
