Donnie McGee Obituary

Reflections of Life

Donnie June Collins McGee was born on July 26, 1937 in Kansas City, Kansas to Drector Wendell and Ida Rebecca Mae Allen Collins.  She was the oldest of 4 children.

Donnie was educated in the Kansas City, Kansas Public School District 500, attending Stowe Elementary, Northeast Junior High and Graduating from Sumner High School in the class of 1955.  She continued her education at Kansas City Kansas Junior College.

On November 2, 1956 Donnie married her high school sweetheart and best friend, Albert Henry McGee, Sr.  To this union 6 children were born. Donnie and Albert were happily married for nearly 60 years until his passing October 27, 2015.  Together they enjoyed working in the church, attending Sumner Class and Alumni function, regularly visiting their children/grandchildren, or talking to them on the phone, working the election polls, attending family functions, and just enjoying each other.

She worked for the Social Security Administration and retired after 32 years of service. Her love of travel led her to pursue work in the travel industry as a travel agent.  Besides working for the Social Security Administration and as a travel agent, Donnie found time to serve in the community as the Neighborhood Chairperson for the local Girl Scout Troop, as an active parent in the Kansas School Kansas School District PTA, and a Room Mother while her children were in school.  She was a member of the parent group that helped the Northeast Junior High School Marching Band successfully raise thousands of dollars for the purchase of band uniforms. She was a Volunteer Grandparent for Chelsea Elementary School where she tutored students.  When not involved with helping and inspiring young people, she could be seen working at the Election Polls in both Johnson and Wyandotte County. She was also an active member of the Sumner 55 Class Club where she served as secretary. Donnie loved to cook, work in her yard, shop, travel, spend time with family and friends, and loved to read and study God’s Word.

Donnie accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior at the age of 7 at King Solomon Baptist Church.  She was baptized by the late Pastor William M. Thomas and remained an active member for nearly 70 years.  As a youth at King Solomon she began her mission work as a Sunbeam and a Red Circle Girl.  In 1962, the late Webster C. West was sent to be the Pastor of King Solomon and Donnie would continue her ministry under his leadership until his reassignment to Shreveport, LA in 1994.  Under Pastor West, she served in many leadership capacities in the Matrons, the Mary Magdalene Circle, as Youth Director and a sponsor for the Youth Choir.  She was a member of various choirs, secretary of the Mission Dept., President of the General Mission, Sunday School Teacher, Executive Secretary, and Treasurer. Donnie was very active in the Kaw Valley Missionary Dept. and held positions with the State Matrons.  In 1980 she was honored by being appointed a Deaconess and later became a Mother of the Church.  In 2015 Donnie became a member of Galilee Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Albert Walker.  While at Galilee, Donnie enjoyed attending Sunday service and Wednesday Bible Study/Prayer meeting, until her health prevented her from attending.

Donnie left a legacy of love, support, giving, faith, and strength.

Donnie was preceded in death by her husband and her parents, and her 2 sisters, Wendolyn Mae Curley and Joyce Renee Wilson Sewell.

She leaves to cherish her memory 6 children, Wendolyn Renee Haywood, Lee’s Summit, MO; Rosalyn Marie Perkins, Overland Park, KS; Joyce Elaine Brown (Stacy), Bloomington, MN; Latonya Aileen Mekha (Repa), Minneapolis, MN; Albert Henry McGee, Jr., Minneapolis, MN; and Andrea Jenee Adams (Cofi), Tyrone, GA; 1 brother, Drector Allen Collins, Sr. (Rochelle), Smyrna, GA; 10 Grandchildren, 6 Great-Grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Rest well thy good and faithful servant.
