A Life of Faith, Service, and Purpose:

Donavan Cordell Gardner was born March 22, 1980, in Charlottesville, Virginia, to Brenette and Gail Warren Gardner. A proud graduate of Washington High School and the Kansas City, Kansas Area Vocational–Technical School, he majored in Graphic Arts and Design, reflecting his creative and expressive spirit.

A devoted Christian and passionate mental health advocate, Donavan served as a Peer Support Specialist for S.I.D.E. (Socialization, Interdependent Development, and Empowerment) in Kansas City, Kansas. His compassion and mentorship empowered individuals to live with dignity, hope, and purpose.

Donavan was a proud member of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), speaking boldly at the U.S. Capitol and Kansas State Capitol, promoting awareness and change for mental health advocacy. He also participated in the Kansas City Ride for Peace, advancing unity and community healing.

A published author of 13 books and a featured voice in the documentary “All These Flowers”, Donavan used his life experiences to inspire others through transparency, faith, and storytelling. He believed that “Lived Experiences” were bridges of understanding and healing.

Donavan’s professional journey also included serving with enthusiasm at AMC Theatres, where he was fondly known as “The Movie Guy.” His energy, kindness, and genuine joy made him a favorite among guests and coworkers alike.

Faith and Family

Donavan’s faith guided every part of his life. He held dual membership at Fellowship Christian Church where he served with the Children’s Ministry and Vacation Bible School and New Birth Christian Center, serving faithfully in ministry and as a Deacon.

He deeply loved his family—especially his mother, Brenette Gardner, his brother Warren Jermaine Gardner (Dawn), and his nephew Warren II, who affectionately called him the “FUNUNCLE.”

Donavan cherished and respected his aunts Teola Tillman, Eldora Gray, Gayle Lee, and Sheilah Jordan, all of whom—along with his mother, Brenette—stood by him as champions for mental health awareness. As accomplished educators, health professionals, and community leaders, they rallied with him at NAMI events, book signings, and advocacy gatherings, sharing his belief in faith, education, and healing through service.

Legacy of Love

Donavan’s life was a reflection of God’s love, creativity, and grace. His laughter, poetry, and passion continue to inspire all who knew him.

Psalms 100:5 – “For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.” This was one of the scriptures he lived by.

Rest well, Donavan (Donnie) Cordell Gardner. Your work is done. You made a difference.
