Dewone Hunter Obituary

Life's Reflection

Dewone Maurice Hunter was born on May 6, 1976 in Kansas City, Missouri to Charles Brown and Sharon Hunter.  Around the age of nine he moved in with his grandmother Omie Brown and attended the Kansas City, Kansas public schools.  He graduated from the International Baccalaureate and Sumner Academy of Arts and Science in 1994.  He majored in Economics, Physics, Mathematical Methods, and Computing Studies. After high school he attended Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas.  He pledged with the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.  Dewone was an avid sportsman and was on the wrestling team in middle school and played football in high school and college.

“D” as he was affectionately called by some, felt the call to serve his country and joined the United States Navy in 2000.  With his near genius intelligence, great courage, and dedication he served on the USS Nebraska (SSBN 739). It is said that the USS Nebraska is the state of the “Good Life” which is earned through excellence in operations and a dedicated commitment to excellence in strategic operations. This fit Dewone to a “T”.  He was a body builder and was named pound for pound heavy weight champion on his ship for three years straight and was awarded with a life size figurine of the incredible hulk representing his “0 %” body fat and defined muscle tone.  He was very health conscious and did not eat meat.  His motto was “meat makes you weak” which he taunted to his shipmates.  Dewone was the recipient of the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal (3), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Navy Recruiting Service Ribbon with 3 Gold Wreaths, SSBN Strategic Deterrent Patrol Pin (3) and Enlisted Submarine Breast Insignia. He was honorably discharged on July 6, 2010 as Electronics Technician, Second Class.  He worked for USD 500 and the Kansas City Life Care Center in transportation until his health began to fail.

Dewone was all about family and loved everyone dearly.  He was preceded in death by his Father, Charles Brown; sister, Shaniece Hunter; Grandfathers, Ozell Brown Sr and Albert Hunter Sr.; Grandmother Emma Matthews, 3 uncles Ozell Brown Jr, Albert Hunter Jr and Lewis Hunter; 2 aunts Carrie Hunter and Kim Hunter. Dewone leaves to mourn his loss, Mother, Sharon Hunter; Grandmother Omie Brown; one brother Laron, 4 uncles Fredrick Banks, Jeffrey Brown, Larry Brown and Kenneth Hunter Sr., 5 aunts Stephanie Gorman, Veronica Mathis, Glenda Murray, June Newsome and his special auntie, Margaret Pender; a special brother/cousin Frank Boswell; and 3 special sisters/cousins,  Tracie Davis, Shontil Simmons and Stacie Simpson, and a host of other cousins, family members and friends.
