Derrick Gill, Sr. Obituary

Derrick Gill
Sunset: May 20, 2025 | Kansas City, MO | Age 52

Derrick Gill didn’t just walk through life—he showed up. With a soft spirit and a ride-or-die heart, he loved fiercely, laughed deeply, and cooked like every meal was a family reunion.

Born with Kansas City in his bones and loyalty in his soul, Derrick was the kind of man who made you feel like you mattered just by being near him. He gave love like it was his life’s calling. His presence had a quiet strength—a calm in the storm—but don't get it twisted: if you were his people, he had your back without question, without hesitation, every time.

Family and friends were Derrick’s greatest joy. And if you were his family—by blood or by bond—you knew it. You felt it in his hugs, his laughter, his loyalty, and his legendary cooking. Time with them wasn’t just precious; it was healing. His love was his medicine, and he gave it out freely. Whether it was a deep conversation on the porch, cracking jokes over a card game, or just sitting in silence—you felt his care. You felt seen.

Then there was the kitchen. Lord, that kitchen. Derrick didn’t cook—he threw down. He seasoned with soul, stirred with swagger, and fed not just stomachs, but spirits. His food told stories. He threw down like it was his second language, and every bite came seasoned with soul.

But above all, Derrick lived for his family. He is survived by his wife, Tyara Gill, and his children: Thomas Waldron, Delisia Morrison, NaDasia Gill, Alexus Henderson, Derrick Gill, Jr., LaJoyce Watson, Saderra Gill, and Isaac Gill. He also leaves behind his sister, Donita Gill, and a host of grandchildren who will grow up with stories of a grandfather whose love never ran out and whose food never disappointed.

His legacy lives on in their laughter, their strength, and every pot of greens or pan of cornbread they’ll pass down in his name. They’ll miss his wisdom, his warmth, and that fire he kept lit for the people he loved. But they carry his light forward—every laugh, every hug, every meal shared in his memory.
