Derieth McCurry Rone passed on January 2, 2023, at the age of 95. Derieth was born May 3, 1927, and grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, the third of eight children. Those who knew her called her Dee. Her parents, now deceased, Thadies Arrington McCurry and Sampson Cornelius McCurry, supplied an example of love, faith, and perseverance. The joy of Dee’s life, her only child Sheila Diane Rone, preceded her in death. Also preceding her are brothers, Sampson, and Thad Edward (her closest friend), sisters Evelyn McCurry, Emma Creal, and Carol Ann McAfee.
After graduating from Sumner high school, Derieth went on to pursue advanced degrees in nutrition management and adult education from Kansas State University, Kansas University, and Missouri University. After working at Michael Reese hospital in Chicago she returned to Kansas City where she worked at General Hospital II, now University Health, and then Kansas University Hospital. At K.U. she became head of production, supervised the Dietetic Intern program, and was an Associate Professor of Dietetics. Later, she traveled the United States performing site visits for the American Dietetic Association.
Dee touched many lives through her love of food, garnering the respect and affection of co-workers and family. She loved to cook even when she was no longer able and was proud of the many recipes she conceived. The family members often asked for her legendary German Chocolate Cake.
In retirement Dee volunteered at Shepherd’s Center for many years, teaching a senior exercise class. She enjoyed reading mysteries, playing her electronic bridge game, puzzles, and occasionally caring for grand nieces and nephews.
In her later years, she continued her interest in self-improvement. Dee stayed up to date on current affairs, continued her quest for learning by reading, and loved Bible study. She was a member of Trinity A.M.E. church.
Sisters Jewell McLaurian and Bettie Lewallen, and a host of nieces and nephews will remember her dedication to family, God, and the value of lifelong learning.
