David M. Abernathy, 72, passed away on March 9, 2020 at University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS. David was born on June 9, 1947 in Kansas City, KS to Vernon Abernathy and Frankie Mae Tyson Scroggins.
David grew up in Kansas City, KS. He graduated from Sumner High school in Kansas City, KS as the “Basketball King”. David joined the US Army in 1966 and served for 2 years. He saw combat in the Vietnam War and was the recipient of the National Defense Serve Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1968, achieving the rank of SP6.
He began working for the Kansas City, KS Police Department where he became a Master Patrolman. He retired after 34 years of dedicated service in 2004.
David married Velma Tuggle in 1977 in Kansas City, KS. They were happily married for 43 years. David was a member of the American Legion Post 94 and Eighth Street Baptist Church. David enjoyed motorcycle riding, he founded The Egyptian Cobras M/C.
David was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Vincent and Wendell Scroggins; sister, Hazel Elaine Scroggins and his daughter, Tina Bunting.
David is survived by his loving spouse Velma Abernathy of Kansas City, KS; his sons,Theodore Bunting (Diana) of Kansas City, KS and Michael Bunting of Kansas City, KS; daughters, Jacqueline Gill of Houston, TX; Sherri Bunting of Kansas City, KS; Kristen Moore of Kansas City, KS; Davette Barnette of Wichita, KS and Andrea Sinzinger of Kansas City, KS. A special great grandson “Son” Damonte Smith of Kansas City, KS and God daughter, Irma Matthews of Kansas City, KS, and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
