Charlotte Craig Obituary

Charlotte Elizabeth Craig passed away on December 7, 2025, at Shawnee Post Acute Medical Center, Overland Park, Kansas. She was born on November 25, 1943, the fifth child of Rev. Ross Madison and Deaconess Mary Gretchen (Fitts) Craig. She grew up in the Argentine area of Kansas City, Kansas and attended local public schools.

In her youth, Charlotte traveled, living in Boston, Little Rock, St. Paul, and Memphis, but she always made her way home to Kansas City. She became a certified nursing assistant and worked in home health care, long-term care facilities, and hospitals throughout her 25+ year career, before becoming disabled in her early 50’s due to a back injury.

In 1975, she gave birth to a daughter, Porcia, which she indicated was one of the greatest joys of her life.  She raised her as a single mom, ensuring Porcia’s solid foundation in Christianity and education.  She poured all she had into her daughter’s upbringing, supported her wholeheartedly in all endeavors, and was immensely proud of her accomplishments.

Charlotte was a thoughtful and giving person, and was known for sending cards, small monetary gifts, and Our Daily Bread devotionals to family, friends, and fellow church members.  She continued this ministry even into her later years at the long-term care facility where she resided.

Charlotte had strong faith in God and throughout her life, attended church regularly and participated in many ministries, including food and clothing outreach, choir, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Bible Study, and Women’s Missionary Society. She was blessed by God with a beautiful soprano voice; and through the sponsorship of one of her pastors, even attended the Kansas City Conservatory of Music to further her vocal training.  Charlotte shared her gift with others, singing during worship services, at funerals, and at weddings. She was particularly known for her solos of “He Touched Me,” “If I Can Help Somebody,” and “I Really Love the Lord.”  She loved all kinds of music, from gospel to R&B to easy listening to country. She remained young at heart and was a fan of pop culture.

Charlotte supported various community organizations over the years, often with her good friend, Mrs. Della Foster Gill (deceased), including Samuel L. Rodgers health fares, Christmas stores, Women United, Friends of Yates, and others. She was a member of Forest Grove Baptist Church, Kansas City, Kansas for a period and was a 50+ year member of First AME Church, Kansas City, Kansas before becoming homebound just before the 2020 COVID pandemic. Still, she remained active in worship service, joining online each week to participate in services at Friendship Baptist Church, Kansas City, Missouri, where her family were members.

Charlotte was a devoted mother, sister, aunt, and friend. She absolutely adored spending time with Alexandria, her only grandchild. Besides faith and family, she loved to cook, shop, travel, crotchet, and complete crossword puzzles. She will be forever remembered for her faith, sense of humor, loyalty, perseverance, and candor.

Charlotte is preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Ross Craig and Deaconess Mary (Fitts) Craig Coffey; brothers Ross, Donald, Fred, Charles, and Walter; sisters Rosemary Turner and Constance Joanne Robinson.  She leaves to mourn, her daughter Porcia Block, son-in-law Bryan Block, granddaughter Alexandria Block, bonus grandchildren, Bryan Block Jr. and Autumn (and Marvin) Burns; youngest brother David (and Lynette) Craig and sister Isabell, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
