Charles Golson Obituary

Life’s Reflection

Charles “Tree” Golson died unexpectedly on December 14, 2020 in Overland Park, Kansas at the age of 74.  He was born on July 8, 1946 in Garland, Alabama to Velmor, Sr. and Bronetta (Brown) Golson. He was the youngest of six. His two sisters: Verna Anderson and Annetta Water; two brothers: DePriester Golson and Velmor Golson, Jr. preceded him in death.

Charles attended Alabama University for one year before joining the Air Force where he served four years.  He was honorably discharged in 1970.  While in the Air Force he picked up the nickname of “Tree Top”, which later became “Tree”.  Upon discharge, he was recruited to play basketball at the College of Emporia, Emporia, Kansas and graduated in 1973 with a BA.  At C of E, Charles set many records and was later inducted into the C of E Hall of Fame.  He was invited in 1973 to try out for the Utah Stars of the ABA League.

Charles married Linda Holland in 1973 and they were blessed with two sons: Charles Marcus and Reginald DePriest.  He was extremely proud of the men his boys have grown to be.

He leaves to cherish his memory and celebrate his legacy: his wife, Linda: sons, Charles (Joy) Golson, Reginald (Randi) Golson; brother, Norwood Golson; four grandchildren, Charles Sekou Golson, Keylan Sharpe, Sloane Golson and Kori Golson; and a host of family and friends.

We will remember Charles as a warm, funny, and insightful man.  He was known for his life’s teachings that were mixed with humor.
