Billy Gene Johnson, 82, passed away on January 17, 2026, in Kansas City, KS. Born on September 23, 1943, in Pilot Point, TX, he was the firstborn child of Howard and Lilly Johnson. Billy lived a life defined by dedication, service, and a profound commitment to both education and his community.
His journey in education began at Fred Moore High School in Denton, Texas, where he graduated in 1963. He then moved to Pueblo, Colorado, to attend Southern Colorado State College. While earning his Bachelor of Arts, Billy was a standout athlete, playing football and participating in tennis, golf, and softball. His passion for learning continued throughout his life, culminating in a Master’s Degree from Emporia State University in August 1999.
In 1970, Billy launched a professional career in Kansas City, Kansas, that would span nearly three decades. He began as a science teacher at Northwest Middle School, but his natural talent for mentorship eventually led him to serve as a counselor at West Middle School. By the time he retired in 1999, he had served the district faithfully for 29 years.
Beyond the classroom, Billy’s influence was felt across the KCK School District 500, where he served as a coach and Athletic Director. He also dedicated many years to teaching Driver’s Education, eventually founding his own business, the Suburban Driving Academy, to continue helping students long after his formal retirement.
An avid sportsman, Billy was a proud member of the Semi-Tough bowling club. One of his proudest personal milestones was achieving a near-perfect score of 299, and he continued to enjoy the lanes until his health declined. He was also a fixture in 55+ Senior Softball, playing for many years with both the All Stars and M & V teams.
In his personal life, Billy married Debbie Jones; the two remained happily married for 30 years until his passing.
In 1994, he became a devoted member of the Pilot Point Church of God in Christ.
Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Lilly Johnson, his brother Harold, and his daughter Cassandra.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Debbie Johnson; his daughters, Camille and Tasha; two stepsons, Tracey and Freddie; his ten siblings: Verda, Andrew, Robert, Martha, Delilah, Wardell, James, LeAnder, Jerone, and Donald. His legacy also lives on through his grandchildren—Correy, Saniah, Hayleigh, Jasmine, Trinity, and Sameir; two great-grandchildren, Aubrielle and Amiri—along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
