Life Reflections
Bertie Lee Jernigan, 85, passed away on May 22, 2022, at Parkway Care & Rehabilitation Center in Edwardsville, Kansas. She was born on June 13, 1936, in Texarkana, Arkansas to Eugene Marshall Sr., and Ailene Lockhart.
Bertie grew up in Texarkana, Arkansas. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Texarkana, Arkansas in 1954. After high school she worked various jobs and later she attended college at Avila University in Kanas City, Missouri, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work. Bertie began work for Sunshine Biscuits as a production operator, where she worked for 2 years. She retired in from WSA in 1997 after 15 years.
Bertie married Alvin in 1958 in Boston, Texas to this union two children were born Derrick and Karla Jernigan.
Bertie was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church for 50+ years, where she taught Sunday School, sung in the mass choir, a Christian social worker for the church and attended Sunday School. She enjoyed studying and teaching the word of God, family gatherings, playing bingo and traveling. she also received awards and accomplishments.
Bertie was preceded in death by her father, Eugene Marshall Sr.; mother, Ailene Lockhart; her two children, Derrick; and Karla Jernigan; brothers, Rev. Eugene Marshall Jr.; and Charles Buck Marshall; and sister, Elizabeth Liz Cantrell.
Bertie is survived by her grandson, Darryll Nelson Jr. (Shae) of Kansas City, Missouri; her brothers, Vincent Marshall; and Kevin Marshall (Frankie) of Los Angeles, California; her great-grandchild, Cameron Nelson; special nieces, Kendra Cantrell of Los Angeles, California; and Alicia Bazzle (John) of Raytown, Missouri; and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church 417 Richmond Ave. Kansas City, KS 66101.
