Bernadine Elizabeth Hooks Mason was born on January 4, 1939 in Kansas City, Kansas into the union of the Edward Wesley and Ruth Ruby Powell Hooks. She was the eighth child born.
Bernadine’s education began in the Kansas City, Kansas Public school system where she attended Phillips Elementary School (Armourdale), Northeast Junior High School and graduated from Sumner High School in 1957. After graduating she attended Pittsburg State Teacher’s College and Avila College where she received a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Elementary Education.
In 1958, Bernadine was married to Warren Robert Mason. From this union, three children were born- Charmaine Kay (Shortie); Warren Robert, and Shaunte Janee.
At an early age, Bernadine accepted Christ and was a member of the Armourdale Church of God in Christ which is now Havenside Church of God in Christ under the Bishop J.O. Owens. In 1981, Bernadine Mason joined Mount Carmel Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the Bishop Ervin Sims, Jr. and Supervisor Mary K. Sims. In her early childhood days, her mother enjoyed teaching her Bible verses and poetry and watching her demonstrate them. One of her favorite Bible passages was Isaiah 53:1-7. Bernadine served in the church as a choir member, member care, head of the usher board, and was appointed as a Church Mother by Bishop Ervin Sims, Jr.

She enjoyed camping with her son, Warren, and Chantel-her daughter in love. She enjoyed going to garage sales with Shaunte. Bernadine enjoyed reading, writing, and cooking desserts (Bernadine’s Strawberry Cake). She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and attending their church and school activities.
