Bessie Lee Horton was born on November 27, 1923 in Liberty, Mississippi to Icy and Charlie Martin. Bessie grew up in Liberty, Mississippi and was a high school graduate. She later met and married Lurie Horton, Sr. in Jackson, Mississippi. Two children were born to this union, Gwendolyn L. Horton and Lurie Horton, Jr.
The Family moved to Kansas, where her husband served in the army at Fort Leavenworth. They later relocated to Kansas City, Kansas and joined Olivet Institutional Baptist Church. She was employed at Fashionbilt Garment Company and retired in 1987.
She loved reading and enjoyed the KC Royals and KC Chiefs teams.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lurie Horton, Sr.; her parents, Icy and Charlie Martin; two sisters, Arlevia Rogers, and Nancy Coleman-Zacharias; two brothers, William M. Martin and Lamar Martin, Sr.; granddaughter, Kristi D. Horton and great grandson, Jordan C. Horton, and granddaughter, Audra L. Horton.
She is survived by her daughter, Gwendolyn L. Horton, Olathe, KS; her son, Lurie Horton, Jr. (Janice) of Kansas City, KS; granddaughters, Monica R. Horton, Kansas City, MO; great granddaughter, Ashyle N. Horton, Baltimore, MD; great granddaughter Taylor Roberts, Kansas City, MO; great grandson Micaiah Noel, Kansas City, KS; and many nieces and nephews.
