He later moved to East St. Louis, Illinois, where he was raised by his mother and step-fathers, Robert Thornton, Sr. and Crawley Anthony, Sr. James also received his education in the East St. Louis, Illinois school system.

James served in the United States Army for several years as a Track Vehicle Repairer, later becoming a Military Officer. During this time, James received tokens of appreciation, including a medal for his services in the Vietnam War.

James accepted the Lord at an early age.

James was employed by the United States Postal Service as a MVS Driver for twenty-eight years before retiring in March 2012. During this time he met his lifetime partner, Pamela Doran. In June of 1994, the two wed and from this union two beautiful daughters, Lucille Nevels and Jazmin Nevels, were born. Pamela had four other children previous to this union in which James raised as his own.
