George Henry Johnson, 86, peacefully passed away on July 29, 2019 at his home in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born an only child on April 22, 1933 in Yoakum, Texas to Roy L. Johnson and Nellie Brown. George grew up in Yoakum, Texas before relocating to Kansas City, Kansas. He acquired his high school diploma in the Yoakum school system. George graduated Summa Cum Laude at the age of sixteen. He was an avid football player during all three of his high school years. He accepted Christ at an early age in Yoakum where he sang in the church choir.
Later after moving to Kansas City, Kansas he united with the Salem Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. C. B. Bailey and was a faithful member until his illness.
George attended San Francisco State where he earned an Associate’s Degree. He joined the United States Navy in 1951 serving for two and a half years.
He was a self-employed Barber at Brown’s Barber Shop in Kansas City, Kansas where he established several lifetime friendships with loyal customers. He worked as a Barber until his health failed, but never officially retired from his profession cutting hair even at the seasoned age of 86.
George married Idella Lewis on September 4, 1960 in Kansas City, Kansas. They were married for 59 extraordinary years. He enjoyed watching sports, reading, staying fit, and keeping abreast of current events. He also took great pride in keeping his lawn superbly manicured. His love of flowers and plants was also evident in and outside of the house.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Johnson; mother, Nellie Brown and son, Michael F. Johnson.
George is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Idella L. Johnson; daughter, Dr. Lydia F. Johnson of Houston, Texas; son, Craig O. Johnson, Sr. (Dr. Adriane Blankinship-Johnson) of Kansas City, Missouri; granddaughters, Tiffany L. Johnson of Kansas City, Missouri; Portia S. Anthony of Dallas, Texas; Christina M. Johnson of Kansas City, Missouri; Shalonna C. Porter of Houston, Texas; grandson, Craig O. Johnson, Jr. of Kansas City, Missouri and three great-grandchildren, Christopher Anthony; Crisslyn Anthony; and Layla Johnson; Godchildren, Renée and Curtis Walker; Pat and Leon Lang; Paul Jones (Karen); Robert Davis (Crystal) all of the Kansas City area and a host of special “sons, daughters and godchildren.”
