On April 15, 2024, John (Jack) Elliot Dickens, Jr. received perfect heavenly peace, “to be absent from the body and present with the Lord.” II Corinthians 5:8
He was born May 17, 1931 in Kansas City, KS to Dorothy Townsend Dickens and John Elliot Dickens, Sr. He graduated from Sumner High School. John was inducted into the U. S. Army after graduation.
December 7, 1979, he married Bernice Powell. John joins John Dickens, Sr and Dorothy Dickens, parents; John Elliott Dickens, III, son; siblings: Harold Dickens, Leland Dickens, Edith Bolder and Barbara Coleman in eternal rest.
John was passionate about his family and always advising the young with his wisdom and insight that he gained during his life. John made friends easily with the pearls of wisdom he gave to anyone who listened. People honored and respected him. His imparted tidbits of wisdom and knowledge helped them on their life journey. He was loving and stern. He meant what he said and said what he meant.
He was an entrepreneur at heart. John worked for over (25) years as a barber and served time as a barber inspector for the Kansas City, KS area barber shops. His mom and pop grocery store on 5th Street was a gathering spot for the community. Everyone stopped in to see Mr. Jack. Later the store was moved to a larger location on Brown Ave where he worked until he retired at the age of sixty-two. Never one to sit still after he retired, he continued to work in the grocery business with his daughter for several years.
John was a music lover of jazz and the blues. He shared his musical style with all. There were many evenings he would sit with the music turned up loud and share it with all the neighbors. From Issac Hayes to B. B. King and Bobby Blue Bland, he found enjoyment and relaxation.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory: Bernice Dickens, wife, Kansas City, KS; children: Jocelyn Dickens, Camden, MO; Johnathan Dickens (Alicia), Kansas City, KS; Vernie Dickens, Port St. Luce, FL; Kimmie Stallings, Kansas City, KS; Andre Dickens, Kansas City, KS; and Chad Dickens, Kansas City, KS; siblings: Carolyn Bernard (Charles) Los Angeles, CA and Herbert Dickens (Joyce), Kansas City, KS; Mary Hollinshed, Kansas City, KS and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great children and a host of relatives and friends.
