Thurman H. Garrett was born on October 13, 1940 in Haskell, Oklahoma to the parents of Ruby and Homer Garrett who proceeded him in death.  His wife of 44 years, Sandra Batie-Garrett also proceeded him in death.

Thurman accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend J.C.Bonner.

He received his education in the Kansas City, Kansas School District attending Douglass Elementary, Northeast Junior High and Sumner High School graduating in the class of 1958.

While an undergraduate student at Pittsburg State, he was initiated into the membership of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

An avid domino player, fisherman and golfer, he also had a deep interest in cooking, especially barbeque and baked goods.
