Celebration of Life

Rita Linda (Davis) Savage was born on September 23, 1943, in Kansas City, Kansas. She was the first child born to her loving parents Rev. Russell W. and Elsie (Dinsmore) Davis who preceded her in death. The eldest of five siblings, she began her education at Vernon Elementary School, Quindaro and graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1962. Rita first attended Kansas City Kansas Junior College, where she was actively involved in and enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow members of the Las Gamma Rees’ social club. Later, she attended Emporia State Teachers’ College.

She married James Henry Savage, Jr. They parented two daughters and, as a US Air Force family, traveled extensively while living in Europe and on various domestic US bases until his retirement. The family returned to Kansas. James preceded her in death.

After her daughters became adults, Rita, a loving mother and devoted grandmother spent time in their homes before relocating to Heritage Health Care Facility in Utica, New York. She remained there under the loving care, attention and support of her sister Marlene until the time of her death.

A lover of music, Rita played the piano and sang in a beautiful soprano voice. She also maintained an enviable 45 and 33LP record collection. Rita also loved to read paperback novels and master new skills. Once she learned to crochet, she gifted family and friends with beautiful and colorful creations. She enjoyed cooking, and her lasagna and desserts were sought after dishes. Loyal and loving, Rita cherished genuine friendships and family. She possessed an enviable memory, and could readily recall events, names and birthdates of family and friends. Most often characterized for her sweet and gentle demeanor, Rita faced challenges with great boldness and grace.

Mrs. Savage accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Allen Chapel AME Church, Quindaro. After relocating to Utica, she became a member of St. James AME Church where she remained until her passing.

Rita made her transition on Friday, February 5, 2016 following a short illness. She leaves to cherish her memories two daughters, Michelle Boston of Des Moines, Iowa and TSGT Octavia Savage-Campbell (Christopher) of San Antonio, Texas. Six grandchildren, Xavier Morrow, Dorrian Goods and Ciara Goods of Des Moines; Savannah Hall, Naomi Savage-Campbell and Chase Campbell of San Antonio. One great-grandson, Zay’Mere Morrow, Des Moines. Three sisters, Marlene Davis, Utica, New York; Constance Davis-Springer, Manassas, Virginia and Dawna Rodgers, West Bloomfield, Michigan. One brother, Russell Davis, Jr. of Irving, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
