James Lamar Nevels was born September 1, 1946 in Vance, Mississippi to James Lee Nevels and Louise Auston. He later moved to East St. Louis, Illinois, where he was raised by his mother and step-fathers, Robert Thornton, Sr. and Crawley Anthony, Sr. James also received his education in the East St. Louis, Illinois school system.

James served in the United States Army for several years as a Track Vehicle Repairer, later becoming a Military Officer. During this time, James received tokens of appreciation, including a medal for his services in the Vietnam War.

James accepted the Lord at an early age.

James was employed by the United States Postal Service as a MVS Driver for twenty-eight years before retiring in March 2012. During this time he met his lifetime partner, Pamela Doran. In June of 1994, the two wed and from this union two beautiful daughters, Lucille Nevels and Jazmin Nevels, were born. Pamela had four other children previous to this union in which James raised as his own.

On December 21, 2013 at Overland Park Regional Hospital, James departed his earthly life. Those who preceded him into eternal life and are awaiting his arrival are his mother, Louise Anthony; father, James Nevels; step-fathers, Robert Thornton, Sr. and Crawley Anthony; son, James Lamar Nevels III; and brothers, John “Jap” Thornton and Robert Thornton, Jr.

James was affectionately known as: Junebug, Jay, Nevels, Jimmy, Jimmy Jam and none other than Daddy and Paw Paw. James was a “Family Man” that loved watching his Westerns, The Food Network Channel, while searching his latest recipes and playing dominos and he was great at both.
