James E. Merritt, 73, passed away on June 23,, 2016 at his home in Kansas City, Kansas. He was born on March 30, 1943. In Laverne, Alabama to Jeremiah and Ola Mae Roper Merritt.
James grew up in Quincey, Florida. He graduated from Atchison High School in Atchison, Kansas in 1962. After high school he joined the Army B Btry 1st BN 83rd Army in 1963 and served 6 years. He served in the Vietnam War and was the recipient of a Purple Heart, and was an Airborne Ranger, then was discharged in 1969, achieving the Rank of Spec 4.
James Accepted Christ at an early age and was an active member of New Bethel Church.
James was employed with the US Postal Service as a mail carrier where he worked for over 30 years. He also worked for JAM at New Bethel Church part-time, and Limo Service for Levi. James enjoyed bowling, fishing, and enjoying his grandchildren.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Jeremiah and Ola Mae Merritt; sisters, Geraldine and Mary; brothers, Nehemiah; Willie; Gene; John Willie; and Johnny.
He is survived by his spouse, Edna Merritt of Kansas City, Kansas; his sons, James Merritt, Jr.; Edward Merritt; Joe Williams; Cornell Jones (Monique); and Cornelius Jones, Sr. all of Kansas City, Kansas; Christopher Miller; of Kansas City, Missouri; Deforester Townsend (Traci); daughters, Carla Merritt; Angela Williams of Kansas City, Missouri; Telicia Williams; and Maya Smith of Kansas City, Kansas; a host of grandchildren; a host of great grandchildren; brother, Michael Merritt (Leticia) of Kansas City, Kansas; a very special uncle, Johnny Mitchell and many other relatives and friends.
